What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.

by Albert Pike

Most of us are born with five senses which helps us figure out what’s going on around us, but none of us are born with “Civic Sense”. Our homes are the basic ground for the inculcation of ethical and moral training, good manners and civility. Then comes the role of educational institutions which reinforces these qualities in us but they fail to do so.

We Pakistanis lack sense of belonging in us, we claim to be patriotic citizens , but do not own this country as our own. We vandalize public property without realizing that we are the ultimate users of it. There are spit marks, urine, vulgar graffiti, random garbage and overflowing sewers at every nook and corner.

Spit marks
Random garbage and overflowing sewers
Littering on road
Wrong way traffic
High beam headlights
Car parked at wheel chair access zone (Aga khan hospital)

No one is to be blamed but ourselves for this situation and very unsurprisingly we’re the ones complaining about it. Therefore there is a dire need in our educational system to have civic sense and social ethics as a subject, along with awareness programs where everyone should be informed about social norms and ethics.

At this point of time when we’re in mid of co-vid crisis and lockdown, an E-book with knowledge about civic sense and social ethics should be introduced and it should have attractive graphics and images which attracts kids and by its help they could visualize scenarios easily. It wasn’t an idea that popped into my mind suddenly it was more like a change that I always knew should be there but never tried to execute it in some form. This time when I got this opportunity I grabbed it for this cause and after a lot of even I learned various social ethics which we sometimes do not even consider.

During the process I gained an understanding that we all chasing this materialistic world and we have forgotten our ethics and values. It is time when we create a sense of belonging amongst us and our kids for that we must instill social values among younger generation so that it becomes second nature to them if we want them to have a better tomorrow.

People tend to forget their duties but remember their rights.
